Although St. Benedict the Moor School is a parish school, it's financial operations differ.
In its earlier years, the school was maintained mostly through a sizable subsidy from the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, a small parish subsidy and the tuition of the students. In 1989 the Diocese was no longer able to commit to offering the large annual subsidy to St. Benedict the Moor School.
Through the efforts of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, the Extra Mile Foundation was established as a unique partnership between Pittsburgh philanthropic communities, corporate business communities and the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The primary goal of this partnership was to provide the necessary resources for four inner-city schools, one of which was St. Benedict the Moor.
Now, 18 years later, the school is thriving and is financially sound because of the large annual financial subsidy of the Extra Mile Foundation. Smaller subsidies still come from the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and St. Benedict the Moor Parish, along with the annual student tuition and fund raising.
